Shawnee and Lenexa may have cancelled their annual fireworks display at Shawnee Mission Park due to budget woes, but other displays will still take place in Johnson County.

Overland Park again joins the Corporate Woods business park and the Overland Park Rotary Club to present the 18th Annual Star Spangled Spectacular at Corporate Woods, west of Antioch Road and north of College Boulevard. Activities including concerts begin at 4 p.m., with fireworks set for 9:30 p.m. Details can be found at starspangledspectacular.org.

Leawood’s annual show is preceded by family activities and music concerts starting at 5 p.m., with fireworks at 9:45 p.m. at Leawood City Park, 10601 Lee Boulevard.

Olathe will have its annual fireworks show beginning at 9:30 p.m. at the Great Mall of the Great Plains, 20700 W. 151st St.

And the smaller cities of Fairway and Westwood will have their display once again this year at Bishop Miege High School in Roeland Park. However, Nathan Nogomeier, director of Fairway Parks and Recreation, cautioned that while the event is open to the public, it is a much smaller show than the typical Shawnee/Lenexa show.

“What we spend on our fireworks display is literally a fraction of what they spend out at Shawnee Mission Park,” he explained, saying the event is a much more intimate, family affair.

The Shawnee Police and Fire departments remind residents that with the exception of snakes and caps, the possession, manufacturing, storage, sale, handling and use of fireworks is prohibited in the city.

Point of View

Do you think it is important for Shawnee to be bicycle-friendly?

I think it’s important. I do love and use the paths, but it would be nice to have lanes so we could use bikes to run errands - saving gas!
