McLouth Kerk Farthing, Shawnee, and his teammates Chris Theis and his son Luke Theis, Lee’s Summit, Mo., have a few tricks up their sleeves when it comes to competitive barbecuing.
Unlike other teams, their team Rubbin-it-and-loving-it BBQ doesn’t start cooking until 7 o’clock the morning of the judging. They prefer the “hot and fast” approach instead of starting the smoking night before the competition.
Farthing said it helped when you fine-tuned the preparations for some of the different meats.
“Last year I said we finally learned how to cook pork,” Farthing said. “This year we were having trouble cooking brisket, but we got over that hump and figured it out.”
For two years in a row the Farthing and Theis’ team has been grand champions at the McLouth BBQ Blowout taking home a trophy, bragging rights and $1,000 cash prize.
The Theises and Farthing have been competing as a team for three years; Saturday was the fourth time they’ve been chosen as grand champions in a sanctioned barbecue competition.
Rubbin-it-and-lovin-it BBQ, along with 45 other barbecue teams, heated up their smokers to compete in the 18th annual McLouth BBQ Blowout. The competition is the Northeast Kansas State BBQ Championship, which is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society.
Farthing said his team’s next stop would be this weekend’s Tonganoxie Days competition – one of the 18 competitions they enter in each year.
He said they would be returning next year to McLouth and go for a third consecutive win.
