Shawnee resident named division dean at JCCC

Larry Reynolds, Shawnee, has been named dean of the communications division at Johnson County Community College effective July 1.
As dean, Reynolds will oversee the Academic Achievement Center, foreign languages, interpreter training, reading, speech and debate.
Reynolds received an associate’s degree from San Jacinto College, Texas; a bachelor’s degree in speech communication from the University of Texas at Austin; and a master’s degree and doctorate in communication studies from Kansas University.
Reynolds has been a speech professor at JCCC since 1991, teaching public speaking, interpersonal communication, debate, intercultural communication and leadership development. He has received many teaching awards and honors including four Distinguished Service Awards, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Faculty Achievement Award, KU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Teacher Recognition Award (student nominated) and League for Innovation in the Community College’s Innovation of the Year Award.
Reynolds, who developed a computerized speech-grading program for public speaking, has given many presentations at national conferences on the topic.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Reynolds served the college on various departmental, divisional and campus-wide committees. He is a past president of the JCCC Faculty Association and a former adviser to Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year colleges.
He has participated in professional exchanges with Udmurdt State University, Izhevsk, Russia, and Wanli University in Ningbo, China.

Do you think it is important for Shawnee to be bicycle-friendly?
I think it’s important. I do love and use the paths, but it would be nice to have lanes so we could use bikes to run errands - saving gas!
