De Soto board to act on seventh elementary school’s name
Belmont Elementary School could be joining the ranks of Horizon, Mize, Prairie Ridge, Riverview, Clear Creek and Starside elementary schools if the De Soto Board of Education approves the name recommendation at Monday evenings board meeting.
The district’s seventh elementary school, located at 58th and Belmont streets, is slated to open in August 2010.
A team, comprised of Alvie Cater, district communication director, Pam Hargrove, Mize Elementary principal and Cary Smith and Jennifer Mead, Mize teachers whom also live in the area, met on Sept. 30 to discuss possible names for the new school. The team used a simplified naming process taking in to account location and emergency services relations to avoid duplicating names within the district.
Cater said the process was similar to that of other local districts when choosing the name for a new school.
“We wanted to avoid duplication of names,” Cater said. “And also save time for the naming of the school. We wanted to create instant identity for the school. Other districts try to name after main thoroughfares, as well.”
The team also recommends that students from Mize Elementary, many of whom will attend the new school upon its opening, to suggest a school mascot and colors.
“We felt it was a way for students to have a voice in the process,” Cater said.
The team recommends that the Mize Site Council review the suggested mascots and colors then represent a recommendation to the board in December.
