The Mill Valley girls whittled a 14-point deficit to four in the final minute Friday night at Basehor-Linwood, but the Jaguars were unable to finish the job.

The result was a 46-37 loss in Kaw Valley League girls basketball action.

The first half was tight throughout. The Bobcats led 12-9 after the first quarter and clung to an 18-16 lead with 2:58 left in the second quarter. BLHS closed the quarter on a 5-0 run, however, and led 23-16 at halftime.

The Jaguars scored just once during the first six minutes of the third quarter. During that time, Basehor built its largest lead of the game at 14 points. The 32-18 lead didn’t last long, though. A layup by Nicole Garretson, a 3-pointer by Emily Altman and a jumper by Kelsey Strobel pulled Mill Valley within 33-25 entering the fourth quarter.

A pair of layups by Mackenzie Conklin and two more buckets by Garretson drew the Jaguars within 38-33 with 2:46 remaining. A Garretson free throw drew the Jaguars even closer.

Mill Valley drew within 40-36 on a runner by Altman with 54 seconds to go, but Basehor made all of its free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

Megan Bergstrom led Basehor with a game-high 18 points. The Bobcats improved to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the KVL.

Emily Altman led Mill Valley with 17 points and Garretson added 12.

The Jaguars fell to 6-7 overall and 4-3 in the KVL. They next play Monday at Turner.

Do you think it is important for Shawnee to be bicycle-friendly?

I think it’s important. I do love and use the paths, but it would be nice to have lanes so we could use bikes to run errands - saving gas!
