Cougars fall in 2OT thriller

February 6, 2010

— Despite heroic nights from senior post Steve Carver and junior forward A.J. Spencer, the Shawnee Mission Northwest boys basketball team ran out of gas at the end in a double-overtime 69-62 loss Friday at Olathe East.

Carver compile a double-double with 25 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Spencer led all scorers with 27 points to go with his six boards and three assists.

The Cougars twice fought their way back from six-point deficits to tie the game and even led by two with four seconds left in the first overtime, but each time Northwest seemed to earn an advantage, it was matched by the Hawks’ perimeter shooting or pinpoint free throw accuracy. The Hawks went 9-of-11 from the free throw line through both overtimes.

The win drops the Cougars to 8-5 on the season. Northwest has little time for rest as it returns to action less than 24 hours after Friday’s double-overtime marathon. In a rescheduling of a snowed out game from earlier in the season, the Cougars will play Shawnee Mission West – a team they fell to at home 41-37 on Tuesday – at 5:00 p.m. Saturday at West

The Northwest girls also came up short on Friday, losing to the Hawks, 52-31, earlier in the evening.

Point of View

Do you think it is important for Shawnee to be bicycle-friendly?

I think it’s important. I do love and use the paths, but it would be nice to have lanes so we could use bikes to run errands - saving gas!
