USD 512 hears recommendations on boundary changes
January 26, 2010
Boundary changes in Shawnee Mission USD 512 that would affect two elementary schools serving Shawnee are under consideration for the 2010-2011 school year.
The Shawnee Mission Board of Education heard the recommended changes Monday at their monthly meeting.
In all, Bill Frick, associate superintendent, presented three changes to the district’s boundaries that would affect seven elementary schools in the district. Schools serving Shawnee patrons that are affected are Nieman Elementary, 10917 W. 67th St., and Shawanoe Elementary, 11230 W. 75th St.
Frick said the recommendations were based on the review of current school enrollment, enrollment projections, transfer data, transportation and safety and historic trends.
As part of the recommendation 85 students would move from Nieman to Rising Star Elementary, 8600 Candlelight Lane in Lenexa.
Students from Meadows and Quivira Place apartments south of 75th Street and Quivira Road would be affected by the change, Frick said. While, the affected students live closer to Shawanoe Elementary, the school does not have the capacity to hold additional students, Frick said.
Current enrollment projections show Nieman would need 27 classrooms for the 2010-11 school year; however the school only had 24 classrooms. Rising Star, which has 31 classrooms, would be using 28 classrooms with the additional students.
Nieman has a capacity of about 550 students, with current enrollment about 556; next year's projection if boundaries are unchanged would put the school at 606 students.
Another boundary change recommendation would move students living in the Colony Woods subdivision south of 79th Street to Mill Creek Elementary, 13951 W. 79th St., Lenexa. Those students — about 30, according to the district — currently attend Shawanoe Elementary.
The other recommendation would move 19 students from Brookridge Elementary, 9920 Lowell, Overland Park, and eight students from Dorothy Moody Elementary, 10101 England, Overland Park, to Oak Park-Carpenter, 10000 Nieman Road in Overland Park. The change would affect Brookridge and Dorothy Moody students who live north of Interstate 435, south of 103rd Street, east of Quivira, and west of Alternate U.S. Highway 69.
Frick said families affected by the changes that wish to continue attending their current school may request an intradistrict transfer. For more information on the transfer requests gon online to smsd.org/boeweb/Jfba.htm.
Board members did not indicate when they would act on the recommendations.
