MVHS students raise money for 2010 Polar Bear Plunge
January 27, 2010
January might not seem like the best time to jump into Shawnee Mission Lake, but that's not stopping John Midiros and Mill Valley high school principal Joe Novak.
Students at MVHS have been raising funds over the past week. If students reach their goal of $1,000, Novak will join Midiros in the 2010 Polar Bear Plunge.
"Most principals would say 'heck no' to jumping into a freezing lake, but Dr. Novak is obviously willing and says its for a great cause," Midiros said.
"He did it last year and was a good sport."
Midiros said the drive at MVHS was another avenue to reach out to the community and students in raising money for the Special Olympics.
Students have been holding bake sales and collecting coins for the drive, he said.
Last year, the school raised $1,583 for the plunge, Midiros said.
Novak said he joined the effort again this year to sweeten the pot.
After the first week of fundraising the school has raised $570.

Point of View
Do you think the state should do more to help businesses near K-7 and Johnson Drive as an interchange is constructed?
Given the time the state has had to prepare, I don’t think completing the access road before starting/ closing Johnson Drive is an unreasonable request from these businesses or those of us who patronize them.
Question of the week
Which area team will last longest in this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament?
