North’s Holmes takes 4th at 6A state bowling
March 10, 2010
It turns out, rolling a 299 game won’t be the biggest highlight of Adam Holmes’ senior season of bowling at Shawnee Mission North.
Instead, the first-year competitor also has a fourth-place state medal to his credit.
Holmes had the most consistent performance of his career Thursday at Northrock Lanes in Wichita as he rolled a 215, 244 and 246 for a 705 series — good for fourth overall and just 23 pins out of first — at the Class 6A state tournament. Holmes’ performance led North to a sixth-place finish in the team standings with a score of 2,528.
Maize won the state title with 2,747, Goddard was second with 2,637 and Lawrence Free State took third with 2,604.
Holmes’ score of 299 came at the Shawnee Mission District Championships where he won his first tournament title. A week later he struggled at the Sunflower League Championships, but he bounced back and rolled a blistering 677 series to finish third individually at the regional tournament. That set the stage for his solid effort at state.
William Paul of Wichita South won the individual state title with a 728 series, Jessy Bauer of Junction City was second with a 723 and Logan Hoskins of Olathe North took third with a 719.
North’s Nathan Arnold tied for 33rd with a 623 series, Joe Haas was 41st with a 606, Matt Stafford finished 44th with a 594, Michael Mitchell tied for 53rd with a 571 and Corbin Luther was 71st with a 500.
Shawnee Mission Northwest’s Marcus Paccapanicca tied for 27th with a 636.
ST. JAMES SIXTH IN 5-1A
The St. James Academy boys bowling team rolled a 2,344 and placed sixth at the Class 5-1A state tournament Thursday at Northrock Lanes in Wichita.
Washington won the state title with a 2,670, Topeka Seaman was second with 2,577 and Emporia finished third with 2,524.
Jack Stewart of Wichita Collegiate won the individual title with a 766 series.
Sam Cooley was the lone St. James bowler to nab medalist honors. He strung together scores of 241, 204 and 197 for a 642 series. That was good for 19th place.
Also for St. James, Chase Jackson finished 44th with a 591, Nick Pucci tied for 51st with a 561, Peter Beatty was 54th with a 550, Carlo Brunelli finished 63rd with a 527 and Andrew Curtis was 64th with a 626.
