Shawnee man accidentally shoots himself in groin

March 11, 2010

A 27-year-old Shawnee man accidentally shot himself in the groin Wednesday while walking around an apartment complex in the city.

Sgt. Bruce Miller of the Shawnee Police Department said the man was wandering through the Fox Run complex in the 7600 block of Goddard about 2:30 p.m. when a gun he had pushed into the front of his pants accidentally went off, shooting him in the groin and the toe of one foot.

The man, who lives in an apartment complex in the 10300 block of 70th Street, called the police. Miller said when officers first arrived on the scene, the man claimed someone else had shot him. But after talking to the man, officers said it was clear he had accidentally shot himself, especially considering the gun was still in his pants.

"So careless handling of a firearm caused painful injury," Miller noted.

The man was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Miller said police issued a citation to the man for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit but the man had not yet been charged.
