Northwest girls strike fast, clobber Washington

December 14, 2011

The Washington Wildcats have been struggling early this season, and the Shawnee Mission Northwest girls basketball team made sure the Wildcats' fortunes would not change Tuesday night.

The Cougars pounced on Washington early and rolled to an 88-19 victory on the road.

Northwest went 17 players deep on its bench, and 15 Cougars scored. Sarah Schmidt and McKayla Ross each scored a game-high 12 points for the Cougars, Jessica Johnson had 10, Katie Biggers scored nine and Brooklyn Wagler, Sydney Thompson, Olivia Sanders and Mariah Smith each chipped in six.

"I am proud of our kids that they kept their focus and continued to play fundamentally sound basketball and were so extremely unselfish," SMNW coach Jeff Dickson said. "We truly have an amazing group of kids from freshmen to our seniors, and it is an honor and a joy to work with them every day.

"Washington has a very young team and their kids worked hard and never quit. If they keep plugging away, they will continue to make strides. Our program has been through those struggles as well, and we completely respect their toughness and their heart."

Northwest raced to an early 27-9 lead and never looked back. The Cougars led 54-13 at halftime and steadily pulled away throughout the final two quarters.

Northwest is now 4-0 for the season. The Cougars close out the December schedule at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Shawnee Mission South.
