Annual Old Shawnee Days festival kicks off summer

June 1, 2011

Take a step back in time, witness life as our ancestors lived during the first half of the last century by walking the grounds of Shawnee Town 1929 during Old Shawnee Days, an annual festival honoring our heritage.

Each year Old Shawnee Days marks the start of summer for thousands of families who come and enjoy this weekend-long celebration.

As well as providing a unique insight into the past, Old Shawnee Days offers an array of free entertainment the entire family can enjoy. Music features both nationally known recording artists and great local bands, entertainment for both adults and kids, crafts and vendors, the carnival and parade, games and contests, and much more.

With something everyone in the family can enjoy, and with free admission to all concerts and events, this is one weekend you don’t want to miss.

A highlight for 2011 is the Saturday night main stage concert featuring two rock acts — Lee Rocker, of the Stray Cats, and Brian Howe, former lead singer of Bad Company.

2011 also sees a change to the main stage concerts. Tribute band Last Child, a tribute to Aerosmith, will perform on Thursday night. Friday night will feature leading ZZ Top, Tom Petty and Eagles tribute bands. And Sunday will see the return of last year’s successful community stage, with local organizations performing.

The special entertainment stage will feature a returning act from the 2010 Old Shawnee Days lineup, “JUMP” The Ultimate Dog Show. A nonstop, action-packed, canine thrill show showcasing dogs and their handlers performing amazing stunts, “JUMP” is guaranteed to be a hit with audiences of all ages.

Another highlight will be the return of the Old Shawnee Days Pie and Baking Contest. Taking place Sunday afternoon, this new Old Shawnee Days tradition started in 2009 and was an instant hit.

Finally, Old Shawnee Days and the community now have even more opportunities to connect and interact online.

Connect with Old Shawnee Days on Facebook and Twitter, using the #OSDays Twitter hashtag to be part of the online conversation. Visitors also can check in at Old Shawnee Days on Foursquare — here’s hoping for a Foursquare Swarm Badge!
