Parade honors 150 years of statehood

June 1, 2011

We Love a Parade

The 2011 Old Shawnee Days Parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Nieman Road. It travels north on Nieman to Johnson Drive, then west to Cody. A parade awards ceremony will be at 5:55 p.m. Saturday at the Band Stand.

The Old Shawnee Days Parade is one of the largest in the state of Kansas.

Awards will be given in categories including Most Spirit, Most Creative, Best Kids Entry, Most Unique Vehicle and Best Vehicle Group. The “Grand Marshal’s Award” will be presented to the unit that best depicts the parade theme and the “Mayor’s Award” will be presented to the best overall unit.

There is a new award category this year called “Best Neighborhood Group,” so get the cul-de-sac together and create a float.

The parade theme for 2011 is “150 Years of Kansas Pride.”

2011 parade grand marshal is longtime Shawnee resident Margaret Amos.

Here’s an excerpt from a letter nominating Margaret for grand marshal: “Throughout her life she has made countless contributions to our community in the arts, in our parks, in service and volunteerism. Whenever a need has arisen and the call goes out, Margaret has always been one of the first in line to help. For this particular tribute it is important to note that she was among the founding members of the Old Shawnee Days celebration some forty-five years ago. What a great opportunity to honor an individual who played an important role in creating this event that has evolved into the grand celebration that we have today.”
