Shawnee planners last week approved a site plan for a new Quik Trip on the southwest corner of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Martindale Road.

It’s not just a regular Quik Trip, it’s a “next generation” style store.

Quik Trip is planning a small handful of such stores — featuring outdoor dining tables, plus beverage and ice-cream service and more fresh food — in the metropolitan area, a company spokesman recently told the Kansas City Business Journal. He said the new prototype was designed to compete with traditional coffee shops.

Shawnee’s 5,720-square-foot convenience store would feature nine double-sided fuel pumps and 49 parking spaces, according to the site plan review approved June 6 by the Shawnee Planning Commission. Plans also call for a Blockbuster video kiosk.

A precast concrete warehouse at the location, 20515 Shawnee Mission Parkway, would be razed as part of the project, according to the site plan review.

The applicant will be required to widen the west side of Martindale to accommodate accessibility required for development as well as future street network improvements, the Planning Commission determined. Since Martindale is a designated on-street bicycle route, the new roadway must be wide enough for a single 12-foot southbound traffic lane, a 4-foot bicycle lane and a 4-foot raised median.
