This year’s Garden Party features butterfly theme

June 15, 2011

Butterflies are the theme of Shawnee Town 1929’s fifth-annual Garden Party from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 25, at the museum, 11501 W. 57th St.

Their brightly colored wings will add a flutter of color to the hollyhocks, peonies and daisies that await young ladies, mothers and grandmothers at this year’s event.

Shawnee Town’s curator of collections, Shannon Hsu, said garden parties have been a popular way for people in small communities to socialize for decades. In the past, ladies would gather for refreshments and conversation as they strolled through their host’s well-tended gardens.

Shawnee Town’s party will include tea treats, a butterfly garden workshop, festive parade and a Monarch-inspired craft project. Girls are welcome to bring their favorite dolls.

Tickets are $18 per person, or $15 for Friends of Shawnee Town members. Children must be at least 6 years old and accompanied by an adult.
