Clippers are buzzing and clients are barking at Shawnee’s newest dog grooming shop.

After running their first grooming shop in a Tulsa suburb since 2006, Seth Bailey and his wife, Treva, returned to Kansas and opened Pooches Dog Salon March 1 at 12301 Johnson Drive.

“We wanted to move back to where our family is at, and we started all over again,” Seth Bailey said.

Pooches has a fixed-price menu for a variety of washing and grooming services — all the way up to a “spa package” groom complete with “pawdicure,” teeth-brushing and a bow or bandanna.

For clients who want to save a few bucks — or who don’t mind washing their own pets but don’t want the mess at home — Pooches offers a self-serve dog wash.

The business supplies tubs, brushes, dryers, shampoo, conditioner and clean-up — basically anything but scissors or clippers, Bailey said.

Pooches also sells dog treats Treva Bailey bakes herself.

Her HotStone Barkery treats are flour-based and flavored with whole-food ingredients including peanut butter, carob and cinnamon.

“They’re all organic, they’re all natural,” Seth said. “You could eat them, too.” (However, he noted, the treats have no sugar so, while safe, they aren’t actually all that pleasing for human palates.)

Seth, a Eudora native, and Treva, from Kansas City, Kan., married at 18 and remain “best friends” despite long hours together at home and at work, Seth said. The couple, who live just east of Shawnee in Merriam, have a 2-year-old son, 1-year-old daughter and several of their own dogs who often keep them company at the shop.

“We area family business with deep-rooted family values,” the Baileys wrote in their business brochure. “We believe that includes our pets, so we treat them that way.”

Pooches is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Reach the business at (913) 631-PAWS (7297).
