Shawnee Mission board to discuss $90 participation fee tonight
Shawnee Mission Superintendent Gene Johnson will recommend a $90 high school participation fee at Monday night's school board meeting.
The fee, one of Johnson's recommendations to address the district's budget deficit, was initially included in the 2011-12 fee schedule approved on April 25. The superintendent's revision includes rescinding the originally-priced $50 fee and the $40 high school activity ticket from the schedule and adding the $90 fee.
Last week, district officials said further details on the fee's implementation would be discussed during the school board meeting.
More than 28 percent of Kansas school districts charge students to participate in extracurricular and co-curricular activities. Shawnee Mission's $90 fee would be larger than De Soto, Wichita and Lawrence's $50 fee for high school school students. Blue Valley charges a $120 fee, Salina charges students $100 and Bonner Springs has the highest Kansas high school participation fee at $200.
The school board meets at 7 p.m. at McEachen Administrative Center, 7235 Antioch.
