‘Day in the Park’ activities return to Shawnee Mission

“A Day in the Park” is back this summer, with a bevy of free activities planned June 4, at Shawnee Mission Park.
The Johnson County Park and Recreation District is offering free admission to park beaches, free pedal boat and canoe rentals and free fishing permits. The event coincides with the district’s and the state’s free fishing weekend, during which fishing and boating permits are waived.
Marina hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 4. Beach hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The following special events are planned:
• The Earth Riders Trail Association will present mountain bike demonstrations from 10 a.m. to noon.
• Families will be able to go geocaching, with GPS units available for free use, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• The Kansas City Flying Disc Club will have discs available for check out from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. near Hole #1 of Shawnee Mission Park’s disc golf course, near the North Walnut Grove area.
• Staff from the Ernie Miller Nature Center will display and give presentations about some of the nature center’s animals from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• Johnson County Sailing Society will offer free sailboat rides and demonstrations from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on Shawnee Mission Park Lake.
• Shawnee Mission Radio Control Club will present model aircraft demonstrations at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the RC Flying Field on the south side of the park.
• The sword theater group Sword Serenity will give demonstrations throughout the day.
• Concessions will be available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Shelter 3, near the marina parking lot.
Shawnee Mission Park is at 7900 Renner Road, in Shawnee and Lenexa. More than 500 people participated when “A Day in the Park” was offered for the first time in 2010.
