New bar seeks to shake building’s old reputation

Skeeter’s is now up and running at 6505 Nieman Road, a space formerly home to Hawg Wild and a string of other bars in recent years.

Owner Steve Skeet said he’s trying to shake off the building’s biker-bar reputation by operating a cleaner, more “inviting” local restaurant and bar. He said he’d like to be known for local live music at night — the bar has a dance floor and weekly karaoke, too — as well as a place where businesspeople can lunch during the day — Skeeter’s has free wireless Internet in the restaurant and also does catering.

“I came in and remodeled it from the ceiling to the floor,” Skeet said. “My goal is to make it a more upscale, full restaurant and bar kind of venue.”

Skeeter’s, which opened in October, had an open house earlier this month for Shawnee Chamber of Commerce members.

The building had been vacant several months after before Skeet, a Tonganoxie resident, took over the lease.
