Submissions sought for Old Shawnee Days pin design contest
May 25, 2011
The Shawnee Lions Club is again sponsoring a contest to design a commemorative pin for Old Shawnee Days, as it has done since 1985.
This year’s pin will depict the Monticello log cabin next to the creek.
The Lions are accepting design submission for the 2012 pin until Tuesday, May 31. A $50 prize will be awarded for the winning design.
There is no theme for this year’s pin.
To enter, the artist must submit a drawing on a piece of 8.5-by-11-inch white bond paper, with the design centered covering a 4-by-4-inch square.
The entry should not be matted or framed. Up to four colors may be used in the design, and the words “Old Shawnee Days, Shawnee Kansas 2012” must be included in the design.
The artist should include his or her name, address, phone number and email address on the back of the design.
Designs will be judged for visual appeal and feasibility of use as a commemorative pin. All entries will be judged by a panel, and the top three designs will be on display during Old Shawnee Days, when the public will be asked to vote to select the winner. All design entries become the property of the Shawnee Lions Club.
Entries should be mailed to Shawnee Lions, 11202 W. 69th St., Shawnee, KS 66203. For more information, call (913) 268-8277or email jlmayo@sprintmail.

The first Old Shawnee Days commemorative pin was a button featuring a black-and-white photograph of the general store, funeral parlor and bank. The following year, Lions began the tradition of annual cloisonné pins made from designs submitted through a contest.
Designs have varied widely. Subjects have included sunflowers, pioneers, local history and buildings at Shawnee Town 1929. A full set of past pins are on display at Shawnee Town.
