A new, locally owned auto body repair business is operating in Shawnee’s downtown area, which has seen multiple businesses come and go in recent months.

K.C. Dentkrafters opened this month at 11005 W. 62nd St., in the former Kansas City Star distribution warehouse behind the Nieman Road post office.

Owner and Shawnee resident Andy Anderson said he’s been in the business about 16 years and that K.C. Dentkrafters was his first solo venture. He specializes in dent and hail repair.

Anderson said last week that he hoped to have exterior signage up soon. Reach K.C. Dentkrafters at (913) 530-8730.

Various business have closed, opened or are in the process of opening downtown:

• Danally’s Bar and Grill, 6022 Nieman Road, has closed. Property manager John Olivarez said the owner attributed closing to a lack of business. Olivarez plans to update the building’s exterior and is looking for a new tenant.

• Work is under way for Fogones, a new Mexican restaurant planned at 11200 Johnson Drive. Some of the biggest hurdles have been cleared — Shawnee planning director Paul Chaffee said workers had installed a grease trap and overhead exhaust system — but more work is needed before the restaurant is ready to open. The space formerly housed Java Deli and, earlier, Cat’s Corner Café.

• Autozone has plans to move into the former Advance Auto Parts store at 11106 Shawnee Mission Parkway, but not soon.

The city has approved a site plan that calls for Autozone taking over the entire building — where one side is empty and the other houses Meineke Car Care Center — and constructing an addition, Chaffee said. Chaffee said Autozone had not yet requested a building permit.

Ray Pohlman, Autozone corporate spokesman, said the company did not expect to move forward for at least 10 months.

Advance Auto Parts moved west, and the new location opened in May at 11818 Shawnee Mission Parkway. Brad Smith, Gardner, is store manager. The store’s phone number is (913) 631-0667.

• Court of Appeals Pub and Grub, 11121 Johnson Drive, is undergoing an exterior facelift. Even though the outside sign isn’t back up, the bar remains open.
