Historical society plans informative hike, picnic
September 28, 2011
The Monticello Community Historical Society is planning a free, family-oriented hike Saturday to the mill site on Mill Creek.
Participants should meet at 10 a.m. at the Wilder Road access point of Mill Creek Streamway Park. A local historian will lead the group to the site of the mill, which was built for the Shawnee Indians in 1836. The path is all paved and the walk is easy, organizers say.
Upon returning to the park, hot dogs, lemonade, chips and cookies will be available for a donation. Participants may also bring their own lunches.
Information about Chouteau Ferry and Station, Tooley Ferry, covered wagon trails and the Shawnee Indians will be discussed during lunch. After lunch, a walking tour to Nelson Island, also via paved path, will be available for those who want to participate. For more information call (913) 667-3706.
