Eckleman’s pitching leads St. James past SM Northwest in Lawrence Friday
LAWRENCE—The Shawnee Mission Northwest baseball team ran into one of the other top pitchers in the Kansas City area in St. James’ senior Matt Eckleman at the River City Baseball Festival on Friday.
Eckleman displayed a sure-fire skill set, allowing only one hit and striking out six Cougars batters in a 1-0 pitchers duel.
For Northwest, senior Marcus McNeace pitched a complete game also allowing the lone Thunder runner to cross the plate in the third inning.
The leadoff hitter for the Thunder, senior Austin Murrell went 2-for-2 including scoring the lone run.
Senior Jake Wodtke drove in Murrell for the lone RBI of the game.
After going more than 14 innings without scoring a run, the Cougars finally had enough when they faced off against Bishop Ward in the day.
With a 4-0 lead to beginning the fifth inning, SM Northwest opened the floodgates when it added five more to the total putting the game out of reach.
Senior Chase Rader became the third Cougar pitcher of the weekend to throw a complete game. His was of the one-hitter variety, as the SM Northwest steamrolled Bishop Ward 9-0.
St. James ended up the weekend at River City with a 2-0 record, while SM Northwest posted a 1-2 mark.
