National expert to share athletic recruiting insight during presentation at Mill Valley

August 8, 2012

National keynote speaker Jack Renkens will share what he has learned during his many years as a high school and college coach, athletic director and parent during an Aug. 15 presentation at Mill Valley High School.

The presentation, which will begin at 7 p.m. in the school’s auditorium and is free and open to the public, will focus on three key messages for the audience:

• You don’t get to pick the school, the school picks you.

• A college coach can’t recruit you if he or she doesn’t know who you are — you need to market yourself.

• Don’t get hung up on the term “athletic scholarship.” Focus on funding, which can be academic money, merit dollars, grants, endowments and achievement funds.

Renkens is in his 16th year as an athletic and motivational speaker. Also central to his presentation is making parents and athletes aware of the athletic opportunities available at lower-division colleges and junior colleges after high school.
