Children’s Christmas party set for Sunday
A crowd of more than 500 is expected to attend Shawnee Community Services’ 29th Annual Children’s Christmas Party from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Shawnee Civic Centre, 13817 Johnson Drive.
Shawnee Community Services is a nonprofit organization that helps feed and clothe families in need. But according to Evelyn VanKemseke, its founder, the party is for everyone, not just those served by the organization.
“If you’re a human being and live on the planet Earth, this is for you,” VanKemseke said.
Admission and all activities are free, and two lucky children, one boy and one girl, will win bicycles to be given away through drawings. In addition, several families will win fully decorated artificial Christmas trees. Other attractions will include free photos with Santa, a cakewalk and refreshments.
In addition, everyone will leave with a bag of goodies donated by the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.
According to VanKemseke, the tradition of hosting the annual parties began when her organization was operating the Community Center of Shawnee in temporary quarters that since have been demolished. The building was located on what became the site of the Shawnee Civic Centre, a city-owned facility that allowed Shawnee Community Services to focus on its charitable mission.
