SMNW girls get elusive win against Olathe East, travel to league-leading Olathe Northwest Friday
The SM Northwest girls basketball team defeated Olathe East for the first time in nearly a decade on Tuesday with its 59-57 win.
The Cougars (10-3, 5-3 in the Sunflower League) bounced back from a 13-6 first quarter deficit, outscoring Olathe East (10-3) 18-8 in the second quarter and took a 24-21 halftime lead. SM Northwest led by as much as 10 in the fourth quarter, but a 23-point final frame from Olathe East kept it close.
Sophomore McKayla Ross scored 19 points and was 7-of-9 from the free-throw line, with five such baskets coming in the final two minutes to help ice the game.
Senior Sarah Schmidt added 15 and also helped keep the Cougars ahead, shooting 4-of-4 from the line
"We are very fortunate to have held on," coach Jeff Dickson said. "Our kids showed amazing mental and physical toughness down the stretch which made all the difference."
The Cougars next play at Olathe Northwest (12-1, 4-0) at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the opener of a girls-boys doubleheader. Olathe Northwest is tied for first in the league.

I was able to watch the SMNW boys and girls basketball play the OE boys and girls basket this past week and all I can say is, WOW! What a difference in style of play between the SMNW boys and girls. GO Lady Cougars!
