#ShawneeSports Roundup: SMNW boys, girls sweep Olathe North Tuesday
February 8, 2012
The SM Northwest girls basketball team emerged in a back-and-forth affair with Olathe North Tuesday, holding on to win 47-36.
The Cougars (11-4, 4-2) jumped out to a 9-1 lead but surrendered eight consecutive points soon after. A 7-0 run at the end of the first half put the girls ahead 25-18 for a lead that would only grow from there.
“We played tremendous defense tonight,” coach Jeff Dickson said in a news release. “Jess Johnson was a monster on the boards with 8 rebounds and our press caused them some problems.”
Johnson was among five players to score at least five points Tuesday. McKayla Ross led the Cougars with 12 points and Sarah Schmidt added 11. Katie Biggers and Sidney Thompson also scored five while Kristina Purinton, Amanda Hoelting and Brooklyn Wagler also got on the board.
The Cougars host SM East (8-6, 6-2) at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
