Northwest’s Galvan 2nd at Dick Burns Mat Classic
Bonner Springs A half-dozen Shawnee Mission Northwest wrestlers battled their way into the medal matches Saturday at the Dick Burns Mat Classic, and no Cougar had a better day than Mario Galvan.
Galvan, a 195-pounder, finished second in his weight class and led the Cougars to a seventh-place finish out of 14 teams.
Blue Valley Southwest won the team title with 199 points, Baldwin finished second with 194.5 and Fort Scott finished third with 185.5.
Galvan used a first-round bye, a second-round pin of Bishop Miege’s Zach Mahoney and an 8-4 semifinal decision against Blue Valley Southwest’s T.J. Martin to reach the finals. Once there, he was overpowered by Fort Scott’s Dane Commings who defeated Galvan, 7-1.
A third-place finish was garnered by Northwest 120-pounder Esdras Cisneros. Cisneros won his first two matches by technical fall and pin before losing in the semifinals 7-1 to eventual champion Tucker Clark of Baldwin. Cisneros then pinned his next opponent to reach the consolation finals. Once there, he built a nine-point lead against Basehor-Linwood’s Antonio Ferro before hanging on for an 18-16 overtime victory.
SMNW 138-pounder Colton Almos turned in a fourth-place finish and posted a 3-2 record.
Also for the Cougars, 113-pounder Emilio Amunatigui and 170-pounder LaPhonso McKinnis earned fifth-place finishes and 220-pounder Jerad Carson placed sixth.
