St. James baseball seeking end to two-game slide on Tuesday
St. James Academy’s baseball team will seek to halt a two-game slide when it hosts Rockhurst at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Thunder began the season with an 8-3 victory against Mill Valley in what was St. James’ first regular season game as a Class 5A team. The Thunder opened the game with a three-run first but the Jaguars answered with three runes of their own in the third. A five-run sixth inning, however, sealed St. James’ season-opening win.
St. James went on to defeat Eudora, 5-2, on April 5 before dropping a pair of games against Olathe East and Blue Valley West on Saturday.
A deep crop of upperclassmen leads the defending 4A state champions in their bid to add a state title from another classification this season. Senior Matt Wagner so far leads the Thunder with a .462 batting average and three RBI. Also with three RBI is junior Alex King, who is hitting .308 through four games. And senior Otto Kaifes leads all Thunder players with four runs scored so far.
Senior Ryan McCourt leads the Thunder with six strikeouts and King has five.
