River City Baseball update: SM North downed, St. James splits

April 19, 2013

LAWRENCE —The Shawnee Mission North baseball team knew it was in for an uphill battle against a talented Lee’s Summit West squad on Thursday night.

However the Indians hung tough before dropping the 9-6 loss to the Titans at Lawrence Free State High School in the River City Baseball Festival.

Lee’s Summit West jumped out to an early lead, scoring eight runs in the first two innings.

But SM North fought back in the fourth inning with a six-run rally to put them back into position to make it a competitive game.

The Titans relief pitching closed down the game on brisk April evening, shutting the Indians out in the final three innings.

SM North (2-7) is back in action at 10 a.m. against Bishop Miege at Hogland Park at Kansas University in Lawrence.

Thunder split opening games

The St. James Academy baseball team went 1-1 in its games at the River City Baseball Festival in the dreary cold morning air at Lawrence High School.

The Thunder dropped the first game of the weekend losing to Blue Valley Northwest 3-2.

Senior Ryan McCourt led the way going 1-for-3 and picking up one of the two RBIs.

In the second game, St. James came back strong against Raymore-Peculiar winning by the score of 10-5.

McCourt proved to produce the big stick at the plate once again going 3-for-4 including three RBIs.

Junior Alex King also chipped in two RBIs as the Thunder improved to 5-4 on the season.
