August 16, 2013

— The Johnson County elections office has received a national award.

On Thursday, the office was named winner of the Guardian Award by the Election Center at its annual conference in Savannah, Ga. Election Commissioner Brian D. Newby was especially recognized for creating the blog Election Diary, which "provides a unique perspective on elections, as well as documenting history that will be useful in planning for the future," the center said. "It both enriches voter education and enhances government transparency."

Since it began in January 2012, the blog has continued to grow. According to the elections office, it averages more than 2,000 unique visits per month.

Johnson County’s project was one of six winners from election offices throughout the country. The Election Office previously received the Election Center’s Best Professional Practice Award in 2006 and the Stars and Stripes Award for Outstanding Partnerships in 2009.

I've worked at the polls for several elections, and Brian Newby has done a great job of teaching the training classes. He's very witty and covers the material in an interesting way. Job well done!
