No gunshots in Shawnee elementary school lockdown
Nieman Elementary School was briefly locked down Tuesday afternoon when someone called the school to report hearing nearby gunshots, but the area is clear, according to Shawnee police.
About 3 p.m., officials at the school went on voluntary lockdown due to the report, said Capt. Doug Orbin, Shawnee police spokesman. However, Orvin said, no gunshots were fired and students at the school are safe.
"We had a report of a possibly gunshot fired in an apartment complex" near the school, Orbin said, but "it's nothing. There's no sign of any shots and no witnesses, and the area is clear."
Orbin said the gunshot-like sound likely came from a large construction site near the school.
