Shawnee man fatally struck while assisting at crash scene
A 35-year-old Shawnee man died from injuries sustained while assisting at the scene of a Dec. 31 crash on Interstate 35 in Kearney, Mo.
The victim, Christopher M. Barnes, was pronounced dead at 4:31 p.m. Dec. 31 at Liberty Hospital.
According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, the accident involving Barnes occurred at 3:48 p.m., when a 2004 Jeep being driven southbound on I-35 by Max Francisco, 19, of Kansas City, Mo., began to slide on snow-covered roadway.
The Jeep struck Barnes as he was walking behind a 2010 Chevrolet that was stopped on the right shoulder of southbound I-35.
After striking Barnes and the Chevrolet, which was driven by Jessica Hamell, 23, of Des Moines, Iowa, the Jeep slid off the right side of the interstate and into a ditch. Neither Francisco nor Hamell were injured.
