Shawnee Police ring out 2012 with targeted enforcement, arrests
Shawnee Police officers made 143 vehicle stops during a focused enforcement effort that spanned several nights leading up to the New Year.
The effort, aimed at enforcing seat belt and impaired-driving laws, resulted in five warrant arrests, three arrests for drugs, two for minors in possession of alcohol, two for open containers of alcohol and one for driving under the influence of alcohol.
In addition to the criminal arrests, officers cited 73 motorists for seat belt infractions.
Among those drivers whom officers determined to be driving sober and wearing their seat belts, several received only warnings for minor infractions or defective equipment.
According to a release, “the Shawnee Police Department encourages everyone to make a resolution in 2013 to always buckle up and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”
