To the editor,
Last fall, I had the honor of being chosen to attend the Shawnee Citizen Police Academy. It was one of the greatest honors I’ve ever received. I always knew this police department served our city well, and at times I took that for granted. What I realized after this academy was that there are so many duties each officer has in addition to their regular assigned duties. I did not meet one officer who didn’t give most of their time to help the city, both on and off the clock.
I wish I could name each officer who took their time to inform us of all operations of the police department, but to be honest, there were so many I can’t remember every one.
I am a wife, a mother and a grandmother, and if I was 30 years younger, I have no doubt I would become a police officer. I would encourage anyone who lives in Shawnee to try to get into this program. It’s interesting and fun, and you will realize what a great police department we have.
I would like to thank Sgt. Steve McCorkill, training supervisor, for putting this program together, even if there were times when we didn’t get out of class on time. If you take the class, you’ll know he does try really hard to get out on time. Just kidding, Sgt. McCorkill.
