Shawanoe, Nieman elementary schools recognized for overcoming challenges
Shawanoe and Nieman elementary schools recently were among 70 Kansas public schools to receive a 2012 Challenge Award.
The award, issued by the Kansas Public Education Task Force, recognizes schools that are making a significant difference in student achievement despite facing challenges in school population.
Shawanoe received Challenge Award recognition in the areas of sixth-grade math and reading, and Nieman’s award recognized sixth-grade math.
“These schools are to be commended for overcoming the very real challenges that poverty poses to education,” said Charles Volland, chairman of the task force, in a letter.

“Actually, all of them. Although necessary, road construction is always a nuisance and a danger. Kansas, at least Johnson County, is very good at working fast and well.”
