SMNW girls bowlers victorious against rivals on consecutive days

January 28, 2013

The Shawnee Mission Northwest girls bowling team won its meet in Emporia on Thursday in a very tight competition — just nine pins separated the first and last teams.

Cassie Queral averaged 211 and Kelly Chambers and Amanda Vanderwerf each posted season-high series to defeat Olathe Northwest for a consecutive day — the teams previously met on Jan. 23 at Park Lanes in Shawnee.

The SM Northwest boys bowling team placed third after averaging 202 as a team. Luke Illig averaged 213 to place third overall.

On Jan. 23, the boys won the Northwest Baker’s Tournament at Park Lanes. Illig, Davis Millard, Mitchell Jinks, Jake Higgins and Josh Patrick all helped earn the first overall championship in school history as the Cougars edged Olathe North. Queral led the girls to a victory in the extra game against Olathe Northwest.

Yet another showdown against Olathe Northwest was on deck for Tuesday at Mission Bowl in Olathe before the Cougars meet SM North at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Mission Bowl in Mission.
