Weekly roundup: Mill Valley runners sweep opening quad, top tennis players victorious
The Mill Valley cross country team started the season in dominating fashion at its Sept. 4 quad at Olathe Northwest.
The Jaguars won both the boys and girls races, beating out Olathe Northwest, Olathe South and Shawnee Mission South. For the boys, Derek Meeks, C.J. Meeks, Calahan Eckardt and Graham Wilson finished first, third, fifth and seventh, respectively. Amber Akin placed second in the girls race while Ellie Wilson, Margo Wieschhaus, Mariah Kalma and Kennedy Hoffman all finished in the top 10. Both races were only two miles long. The Jaguars will be in Paola Saturday where they will return to the traditional 4K and 5k races.
The Sept. 5 Spring Hill Invite for the girls golf team was cancelled. The Jaguars will next play in Thursday's SM South Invitational at Deer Creek Golf Course in Overland Park.
There weren’t many fireworks in Mill Valley soccer team’s game against Shawnee Heights, as it lost, 1-0. The Jaguars looked to rebound when they visited Gardner-Edgerton on Tuesday. Both of the top players on the girls tennis team won their respective matches in Friday’s dual with Bishop Miege. No. 1 singles player sophomore Paige Wiebe and No. 2 junior Mikaela McCabe each started the season with 8-6 victories.
The No. 1 doubles team of senior Natalie Windham and junior Myesha Kennedy lost 8-4. It was the first time those two had played together, and coach Alyssa Meyer said they are still trying to figure out the No. 2 doubles team. Overall, the team went 5-11 in singles and 2-6 in doubles. Mill Valley will play host to a dual with Olathe North Thursday.
The volleyball team started the week splitting a triangular meet at Shawnee Mission West on Thursday.
On Saturday, the team won the Olathe South tournament, beating Shawnee Mission South, Wichita Southeast, Lawrence and Olathe South. The team moves to 6-2 on the season.
