Weekly roundup: SMNW cross-country, soccer kicks off with success
Seniors Hayley Nugent (16:19) and Tori Tummons (16:37) each notched top-25 finishes in the Cougars' season-opening Greg Wilson Classic at Johnson County Community College on Saturday. Nugent led SM Northwest with a 20th-place finish and Tummons placed 25th.
On the boys side, junior Chase Bennet finished 23rd with a time of 17:46 and senior Nate Sterns (17:53) wasn't far behind at 27th. The Cougars will next travel to Saturday's Emporia Invitational.
The girls golf team had to wait one more week until kicking off its season. The Cougars' previously scheduled match against Olathe North at the Overland Park Golf Course on Sept. 4 was cancelled and will not be rescheduled, coach John Reiff said. SM Northwest will now open its season at 1 p.m. Thursday against SM South at Deer Creek Golf Course.
The Cougars' gymnastics team opened its 2013 campaign at SM West on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time, but stay tuned to shawneedispatch.com for the latest.
The Cougars improved to 2-1 after a 1-0 victory against Olathe South on Saturday. Tom Green assisted Ethan Bowman for SM Northwest's lone goal. Goalkeeper Steven Skells and the Cougar defense made sure that would be all that was needed for the team's second win of the season. The Cougars' first win came against Oak Park on Thursday. Bowman, Collin Jones, Cole Nelson and Seth Bowman all added goals. SM Northwest will next travel to play Washburn Rural in Topeka at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The girls tennis team opened its season with a 5-7 loss to Blue Valley. Brooke Bennett picked up a singles victory in addition to helping notch the Cougars' lone doubles win alongside Carli Sommerla. Other singles winners included Lauren Benjamin, Amanda Rebori and Gabby Whitmore. The Cougars traveled to SM South for a quadrangular meet on Monday.
Volleyball dropped its season opener at Blue Valley North, 3-1, on Sept. 4 and will next play at 5 p.m. Thursday in a home-opening quadrangular meet against SM North, Free State and SM East.
