Thornhill sets record as St. James tops Hayden
The St. James Academy boys basketball team captured a 66-58 home victory over Topeka Hayden on Tuesday evening, thanks in large part to a record-setting performance from one its top players.
Junior guard Zach Thornhill scored a school-record 37 points for the Thunder (4-2), breaking the mark of 36 he set on Dec. 12 against Shawnee Mission West. Will McKee finished with 12 points, and Zach Wagner added six.
Jett Canfield scored a team-high 22 points for the Wildcats (1-3), and Zach Harvey finished with 15.
After trailing 27-25 at halftime, St. James outscored Hayden 20-12 in the third quarter and 21-19 in the fourth to pull out the victory.
The Thunder will be back in action at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2, as they play host to St. Thomas Aquinas.
Hayden girls prevail
The St. James girls lost a closely-contested game to Hayden, falling 54-48. Kayla Staley scored a team-high 19 points for the Lady Thunder, and Emily Kaufman added 12.
St. James held a 40-37 lead at the end of the third quarter, but the Lady Wildcats finished the game on a 17-8 run to earn the victory. Jordan Lenherr led Hayden with a game-high 20 points, and Preston Reid finished with 17.
St. James will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2, as it plays host to St. Thomas Aquinas.
