Shawnee police search for suspected auto burglars
Shawnee police officers searched the neighborhoods around Johnson Drive and Pflumm Road early Thursday morning for two suspected auto burglars.
Maj. Dan Tennis said a Shawnee police officer was in the area of 63rd Street and Widmer Road near the Cottonwood Park Apartments at 4:50 a.m. when the officer saw two men run from a space between two parked cars. The men got into a waiting vehicle and drove away past the officer east on 63rd Street, Tennis said.
The officer pursued the men as they drove north and picked up speed on Pflumm Road, Tennis said, until their vehicle stalled near the Johnson Drive intersection. Tennis said the two men inside the vehicle fled on foot into the surrounding area.
A Lenexa canine unit was called out and police searched the area until about 6:15 a.m. but did not locate the suspects. The suspects are described as two white men, one wearing a black jacket and black pants.
Tennis said officers were not able to locate any evidence of auto burglaries in the area but did take a report on criminal damage to property near the Cottonwood Park Apartments where the window of a car had been broken, but nothing was reported stolen. Tennis said police have not confirmed if this case is related.
