Shawnee Police are investigating after four people ran from a stolen car early Wednesday morning.

Major Dan Tennis says an officer was on routine patrol at about 1:41 a.m. in the 7100 block of Cottonwood, when he spotted a grey Chevy 4-door in the cul-de-sac at 71st Place and Cottonwood.

"The vehicle did not have the headlights on, so the officer turned around at 72nd Street and tried to initiate a traffic stop," Tennis said. "The vehicle turned onto 71st Terrace and slowed down, then drove into the front yard of a residence in the 14000 block of 71st Terrace and four people exited the car and ran."

Tennis says the vehicle rolled into a tree, since it was left out of gear.

The officer did not give chase, instead stayed with the car and called for other officers to check the area. Radio traffic indicated that the suspects were last seen running westbound from the car.

At least five officers and a K-9 unit responded to the area.

"Officers established a perimeter to locate the people who fled, but the suspects were not located," Tennis said.

Major Tennis confirmed that the vehicle had just been stolen from an address in the 7200 block of Rene Street.

"We processed the vehicle for evidence at the scene and it was released to the owner," Tennis said.
