Mill Valley boys, SJA girls take fourth at state

The Mill Valley boys and St. James Academy girls both finished fourth at the Class 5A cross country state championships on Saturday, capping successful seasons with strong performances at the highest level of competition.

The Jaguars finished with a combined score of 117, preceded in the standings by St. Thomas Aquinas (22), Blue Valley Southwest (92) and Bishop Carroll (108).

Mill Valley was led by senior Derek Meeks, who finished 18th with a time of 16 minutes, 52.40 seconds. Senior Garret Fields (20th, 16:55.20), junior Max Jones (27th, 17:11.10), sophomore Justin Grega (28th, 17:12.20) and sophomore Tyler Coad (32nd, 17:19.50) rounded out the Jaguars’ point scorers.

On the girls side, St. James finished with a combined score of of 119, preceded in the standings by St. Thomas Aquinas (30), Blue Valley Southwest (90) and Lansing (118).

The Lady Thunder were led by junior Gabrielle Boucher, who finished sixth with a time of 19 minutes, 45.90 seconds. Senior Judi Jones (seventh, 19:48.10), sophomore Mary Goetz (20th, 20:14.20), sophomore Jilli Jones (60th, 21:46.10) and sophomore Kendall Dolan (64th, 21:50.90) rounded out the St. James point scorers.

Although they did not qualify for state as a team, the Mill Valley girls did have four competitors at the state meet. Senior Ellie Wilson was the top performer, finishing 18th with a time of 20 minutes, 11.80 seconds. Senior Amber Akin (24th, 20:33.30), freshman Delaney Kemp (37th, 20:51.50) and sophomore Britton Nelson (55th, 21:34.80) also competed.

Three St. James boys also participated in the state meet: junior Erik Wilkinson (40th, 17:26.00), senior Ben Huerter (50th, 17:37.60) and freshman Jack Moore (55th, 17:42.10).
