Seven area basketball players named as KBCA all-state selections
Shawnee Mission North's Marcus and Michael Weathers, SM Northwest's Brenni Rose, St. James Academy's Zach Thornhill and Mill Valley's Catie Kaifes, Clayton Holmberg and Logan Koch were all recognized by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association as all-state selections on Monday.
The Weathers brothers were named to the Class 6A first team after leading the Indians to their first state championship in 63 years. Michael and Marcus finished first and second all-time on SM North's scoring list, and have signed to play at Miami (Ohio).
Rose — the Cougars all-time leading scorer — was picked to the first team of the Class 6A girls squad. The 6-foot senior helped the Cougars to finish as Class 6A runner-ups, and the highest win total (22) in program history. Rose has committed to continue her basketball career at Drake.
Koch and Holmberg were respectively picked to the first and third all-state teams for Class 5A after pacing the Jaguars on their championship run. The Mill Valley duo combined for 41 points in the Jaguars' overtime win in the state title game over Kapaun Mt. Carmel. Koch and Holmberg have respectively signed to play at Eastern Illinois and Washburn.
Caifes was tabbed as a first-team selected to the 5A girls squad. The Mill Valley senior led the Jaguars to a state tournament berth, and poured in 25 points in a 55-43 loss to Salina Central in the quarterfinals.
Thornhill rounded out the all-state area players, as he was picked to the Class 5A boys team. The St. James junior broke his arm in the sub-state title game against St. Thomas Aquinas, but played a big role in the Thunder's regular-season success.
Marcus Weathers, Michael Weathers, Koch and Rose were also selected to play in the KBCA All-Star game, which is scheduled for June 25 at Kansas Wesleyan University.
