Paul Hartman, a St. Joseph Grade School seventh grader and Shawnee resident, Monday was selected as the “Mayor for a Day” essay contest winner.
Paul will be recognized at the April 25 Shawnee City Council meeting. He will also get to spend part of a day with Mayor Michelle Distler to see firsthand what it is like to be mayor.
Distler began the “Mayor for a Day” essay contest this year as a way for youth to better connect with their local government. The theme for this year’s essay was closely related, asking students to write on the topic, “How to get more people engaged with their local government.” The contest was open to all seventh grade residents in Shawnee.
Distler plans to continue the essay contest annually, kicking off the competition in February of each year.
