Shawnee man pleads guilty in deadly Overland Park crash
The driver accused of causing a crash which killed a pregnant woman in January pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Tuesday.
Raphael Sherman, a 21-year-old from Shawnee, was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter, but the charges were amended.
While at Johnson County District Court, he also pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated battery.
At 7 p.m. on Jan. 10, Sherman had been driving westbound on 75th Street at Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park when he ran a red light, striking a Chevy Silverado truck and a Toyota Sienna minivan, both which had been traveling on Metcalf.
Denise Lopez, a 25-year-old who was 39 weeks pregnant, died as a result of the injuries she sustained from the crash.
Her baby’s life was saved at the hospital.
Several other people who were involved in the accident were also treated for injuries.
Sherman’s sentencing is scheduled for 11 a.m on Oct. 17.
