Woman arrested following early-morning disturbance at Walmart

Shawnee Police say they arrested a woman following a struggle with officers at the Walmart in western Shawnee.

The nerves were running high for Shawnee Mission Northwest junior forward Sarah Petersen before the Cougars’ season opener Friday at SM West, but one wouldn’t know it by how she played. Petersen — who suffered a season-ending knee injury early in her sophomore campaign — scored the first four points of the game and picked up one of her two charges in the first 90 seconds, as she set the tone in the Cougars’ 54-32 win over the Vikings. Senior point guard Emmalee Rose led the Cougars with 17 points, and Jordann Nachbar and Petersen added eight apiece. Nachbar also grabbed 12 rebounds.
Oleson, Cougars hold off Vikings, 58-54, in season opener

Shawnee Mission Northwest senior Alex Oleson made two free throws with 2.3 seconds remaining to secure a 58-54 win for the Cougars over SM West in their season opener Friday. Northwest senior Colton Skeens led the Cougars with 17 points. The Cougars will play their home opener Tuesday against Mill Valley. The Jaguars lost their season opener Friday to Blue Valley Northwest, 73-58, despite being tied with the Huskies at halftime.
