De Soto girls hoops wins Huhtamaki Hardwood Classic

Junior Mariah Grizzle and senior Sydney Jones combined for 27 points to lead the De Soto girls basketball team to a 42-39 victory over Truman Saturday in the championship game of the Huhtamaki Hardwood Classic. The De Soto boys basketball team lost in the Huhtamaki Hardwood Classic title game to Piper, 68-50.
St. James alumnae Gray, Fitzmorris help Stanford volleyball to Final Four

St. James Academy alumnae Jenna Gray and Audriana Fitzmorris helped the Stanford volleyball team reach the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament Saturday with a five-set win over Wisconsin.

The work in the practice room has continued to pay off for Shawnee Mission Northwest wrestlers Jerad Habben and Charles Brockmann, as they both won their weight classes Saturday at the Cougar Invitational. Tanner Willmon and Arthur Bagdasaryan led SM North with sixth-place finishes.
MV’s Ward, SJA’s Lautt win weight classes at Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic

Mill Valley junior Conner Ward won the 132-pound weight class Saturday at the Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic to lead the Jaguars to sixth place. St. James senior Clay Lautt led the Thunder to 20th place by winning the 182-pound weight class.
St. James boys basketball tops Barstow for Championship Showdown title

As St. James Academy senior Zach Thornhill was in the process of going off for 17 points in the first half of Saturday’s Championship Showdown title game against Barstow (Mo.) at Shawnee Mission East, there was some chatter among the Thunder fan base about the Nebraska-Omaha signee possibly ending up with 40. Thornhill’s only second-half points came on a layup in the final minute, but his teammates picked up the slack in the Thunder’s 69-61 win over the Knights. Thornhill, Keenan Fitzmorris and Will Mckee were named to the all-tournament team, while Barstow’s Jacob Gilyard — who scored 36 against the Thunder — was the Championship Showdown MVP.
