Habben, Brockmann lead SMNW at Cougar Invitational
As the saying goes, practice has made perfect for Shawnee Mission Northwest wrestlers Jerad Habben and Charles Brockmann so far this season.
The dynamic grappling duo remained undefeated on the season after leading SM Northwest to 10th place Saturday at the Cougar Invitational.
"We wrestle hard mostly every practice, and that's been the key driving force in our success this season," Habben said.
Habben won the 120-pound weight class to improve to 11-0. After receiving a first-round bye, the SM Northwest junior won by fall over Liberty North's Isaiah Stenner and Ft. Osage's AJ Sanchez in the first period to reach the title match against Free State's Bennett King. The Firebird junior gave Habben his toughest match all year, but the SM Northwest 120-pounder still prevailed in a 11-5 decision.
Brockmann also got to square off against a Free State wrestler in the 113-pound championship match, as he went up against Garrett Bradley. Brockmann breezed through the title match after winning by fall in 1:14. The SM Northwest sophomore moved to 10-0 on the season.
"Same as him (Habben), just working hard in practice and stuff," Brockmann said of his strong start to the season. "It just helps a lot."
While Habben has been pleased about his personal start to the season after moving up two weight classes from last year, he has been disappointed with the team's overall performance. Habben feels like the Cougars are capable of performing better, and thinks they'll improve as the season goes on.
"A lot of these kids are realizing how tough it actually is, and I feel like it will drive them in the practice room to work harder," Habben said.
The trio of Gavin Hartman (132 pounds), Jackson Burnett (145) and Kevin Thompson (170) all finished sixth in their respective weight classes to round out the placers for the Cougars.
SM North places 13th behind Bagdasaryan, Willmon
Two SM North wrestlers earned sixth-place finishes as well in Arthur Bagdasaryan (152 pounds) and Tanner Willmon (195).
The Indians placed 13th in the team standings.
