Mill Valley, Northwest seniors named National Merit finalists
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation named two Mill Valley High School seniors and six Shawnee Mission Northwest High School seniors as finalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Justin Curto and Allison Kubiak of Mill Valley High School are among the 15,000 Finalists in the prestigious scholarship program, placing them among the top one percent of all high school seniors in the country. Also in the De Soto school district, Jaycie Thaemert of De Soto High School was named a finalist.
At SM Northwest, Gina Gabrielli, Samuel Korth, Grace Ladd, Deon Richmond, Nicholas Senior and Samual Verschelden all were named finalists. Northwest had the most finalists of the Shawnee Mission high schools; SM East and SM South had three, while SM West had two. SM North did not have any finalists.
Also in the Shawnee area, St. James Academy senior Grace Schippers was a finalist.
These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to compete for the National Merit Scholarships that will be offered in the spring.
About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
To become a finalist, the student submitted a detailed scholarship application, including endorsements and an essay, as well as earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.
